Dr. Nieca Goldberg Talks 'American Heart Month' - YouTube

Nieca Goldberg (born October 21, 1957) is an American medical doctor, a practicing cardiologist, a senior executive in the health care industry, an associate professor in medicine, an author, and a weekly radio show host. The American College of Cardiology, describes Goldberg as a "clinical innovator" and "a nationally recognized pioneer in women's heart health."

Pioneer in women's heart health and customized health care for women

Goldberg is the Medical Director at the Joan H. Tisch Center for Women's Health at the NYU Langone Medical Center, where she created a customized health care program for women in 2007. Goldberg was previously Chief of the Women's Heart Program at Lenox Hill Hospital and established that hospital's first program for women's heart care in 1994. In addition to her experience as a cardiologist and health industry executive at major New York hospitals, Goldberg was the founder and CEO of Total Heart Care, PC, a private medical practice in the emerging specialty of women's heart care (2003-2010). Earlier in her medical career, Goldberg oversaw the heart exercise and imaging laboratory at SUNY Downstate Medical Center.

Academic pursuits

Goldberg is a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the NYU School of Medicine and was previously an Assistant Professor of Medicine at NYU and SUNY Downstate Medical Center, respectively. Goldberg also leads the NYU School of Medicine's academic partnership with the Joan Tisch Center for Women's Health in the Women's Heart Attack Research Program. The Faculty Bibliography of the NYU Health System Library references twenty-four articles by Goldberg among her research projects; 20 of them are peer reviewed. Four additional articles (by a B. Goldberg) are mistakenly shown on Nieca Goldberg's page.

Goldberg is a graduate of SUNY Downstate Medical Center (M.D. degree) and carries an active certification in cardiovascular disease as well as internal medicine. She did her medical residency at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center and received a cardiology fellowship at SUNY Downstate.

Active spokesperson and advocate for women's heart health

Goldberg is a national spokesperson for the American Heart Association and has been in the forefront of the AHA "Go Red for Women" campaign. She is an advocate for raising awareness and educating women about gender-related heart heath issues through a variety of additional vehicles--including health publications, special features and books.

Books

Goldberg has written two books on women's heart health; the first was Women are Not Small Men. It was updated and retitled The Women's Healthy Heart Program - Lifesaving Strategies for Preventing and Healing Heart Disease. She is also the author of Dr. Nieca Goldberg's Complete Guide to Women's Health. Goldberg received the "Books for a Better Life Award" in the wellness category in 2002; the award is issued annually by the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation.

Directorships and other leadership (volunteer or Pro Bono assignments)

A longstanding member of the American Heart Association, Goldberg has led and participated in other awareness and fundraising initiatives for the AHA beyond her role in the forefront of the "Go Red Campaign" from its inception, including as a member of the "Executive Leadership Team" for the AHA Annual Heart Ball in 2016 and 2017. Goldberg's involvement as a leadership volunteer with not-for profit organizations concerned with women's health also includes: co-medical director of the 92nd Street Y Cardio Rehab Program, membership on the Board of Directors of the Society for Women's Health Research (2015-Present) and as a member of the Woman's Day Editorial Advisory Board. She is also a member of the Women's Forum of New York, a "by invitation" organization of women leaders and a chapter of the International Women's Forum.

Media coverage

Goldberg's advocacy for customized health care for women and her leadership in women's heart health care have drawn broad-based media attention, as noted in her professional profile at Doximity, the nationally recognized online medical network. In addition, she makes appearances through at least two global speaker bureaus, where she is touted as a pioneer in women's heart health and cardiac care for women, and as the author of two books. Goldberg's commitment to women's health and her special expertise in women's heart health has attracted the attention of broadcast media and popular online resources as well as print publications dating back to 1999. In that year, New York Magazine's feature story: Dr. Nieca Goldberg: Deep in the Heart appeared in conjunction with its annual list of "Best Doctors." In the same issue of the magazine she was included in a list of "Hall of Fame Doctors."

Goldberg has made numerous television appearances on major networks: The Today Show, The Dr. Oz Show (national), Good Morning America "GMA Health ABC" (National), WNYW-TV Good Day New York (Fox) in studio interview videotape, and CBS News (Local). Other broadcast media appearances by Goldberg are wide ranging; from CBS Evening News and ABC's The View to Hallmark Channel's Home & Family. She currently hosts Women's Health: Beyond the Heart, a weekly radio show on SiriusXM Doctor Radio.

There is also a broad range of print publications that have shown interest in her expert opinions and practical health care advice for women including: The New York Times, The New York Post, The New York Daily News, Family Circle, and Glamour among others.

Awards and honors

Among Goldberg's unique honors, is General Mills' cereal promotion that featured her likeness with a public service message on 3,000,000 boxes of Wheat Chex and MultiGrain Chex in 2004. Earlier in the year, she reviewed scripts with writer for a daytime TV series, "One Life to Live." Many other awards and honors for her work have been conferred upon Goldberg as noted by the Society for Women's Health Research: the American Heart Association's "Dr. with Heart Award," Woman's Day magazine's "Red Dress Award," Jewish Women International's "Women to Watch" Award and "The Women at Heart" 2006 Honoree Award from the Links Greater New York Chapter." Dr. Goldberg has been included in New York Magazine's annual "Best Doctors" list, from 2004-2016, and she was also accorded the same distinction between 1999-2001.
